Walton F. Mitchell, Jr.


Walton F. Mitchell, Jr. went to be with his Lord on January 8, 2013. He was born on August 11, 1931 and spent his lifetime in Craig County – the community that he loved and cherished.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Walton F. Mitchell and Lucille S. Mitchell and sister, Martha McCaleb. Surviving to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 60 years, Evelyn Farrier Mitchell; daughter, Dr. Vicky Mitchell Fisher; son Walton F. Mitchell, III and wife Kate; granddaughter, Lee Anne Carroll and husband, Andy; grandson, Andrew Mitchell, and great grandsons; Canyon, Grayson, and Ashton Carroll; sisters, Betty Mitchell and Patricia Duncan and husband, Calvin; brother-in-law, Leon McCaleb; sisters-in-law, Mary Lee Farrier and Virginia Barger and husband, C.D. Barger, Jr. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, countless friends, and special friend, Tim Miller.
He was a teacher, coach and administrator in the Craig County School system from 1956 until 1980. During his tenure, he developed the plans for and led the development of Camp Mitchell, a community center in Craig County. He was also one of the principals in developing and maintaining the football program at New Castle and Craig County High Schools. In 2005, the football field at Craig County High School was named Walton F. Mitchell, Jr. Field in his honor. Following his career in education, he was elected to the position of Clerk of Circuit Court for Craig County in 1980 and served until his retirement in 1993. He was a lifelong member of the New Castle Christian Church and served as a teacher, superintendent of Sunday School, deacon, elder and trustee until the time of his death.
He received his BS in Agricultural Economics from Virginia Tech in 1954 and his MS in Education from Virginia Tech in 1962. While at Virginia Tech, he was a member of the 1954 Southern Conference Championship baseball team and he is a lifetime member of the Virginia Tech Monogram and Golden Hokie Clubs.
Funeral Services will be officiated by Dr. Ernie Johnson on Friday, January 11, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the New Castle Christian Church. Interment will follow at Huffman Memorial Park. Visitation will be at Paitsel Funeral Home on Thursday, January 10, 2013 from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to New Castle Christian Church, 282 Salem Avenue, New Castle, VA 24127 or Craig County High School Athletic Department, 25239 Craigs Creek Road, New Castle, VA 24127.
