23rd
Annual Disabled Veterans Hunt
December 05, 2009 at
the Caledon Natural Area in King George County
This
special event has been held at Caledon in King George County on the
first Saturday in December since 1998. Though the weather was
uncooperative the steady rain and snow did not dampen the spirits of the
24 Disabled Veteran Hunters or over 80 volunteers who were fortunate
enough to have the opportunity participate in this year’s hunt. In spite
of the weather the Vets harvested 19 deer.
The
Veterans are patients of McGuires Medical Center and members of the
Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Paralyzed Veterans Association. The event is
sponsored by the Fredericksburg/Northern Neck Chapter of the Virginia
Deer Hunters Association, with financial support provided by the
Fredericksburg Chapter of the Knights of Pythias, Lodge #22.
I have
been fortunate enough to have participated in this event for the past 15
years and it is one of the most rewarding experiences that anyone could
imagine. These veterans
have served our country with dignity and honor and have incurred
different physical and mental disabilities as a result of that service.
In the 15 years that I have been associated with this event I have never
heard one complaint from these veterans. They are extremely thankful to
have the opportunity to participate and when they leave they always are
looking forward to next year’s event.
Remember
these men and women have given a large part of themselves in service to
us and our country. If you get a chance
please visit one of the areas veteran hospitals
and let them know that they are
not forgotten.
